You may be missing an important item from your toolbox. Every household should have at least one reliably designed screwdriver to handle loose hardware and replacement tasks. Without it, you’ll be stuck.

Understand the types of screwdriver bits

The screwdriver works by amplifying your hand’s turning motion of the hand. The energy is transferred to a specially designed small tip that is inserted into the end of the screw. There are many tip designs that are suitable for niche tasks such as assembling home appliances. However, two styles dominate the market.

The first is a regular tip. They are called flat, flared and straight. It looks like a simple wedge. The second is a Phillips tip. It has an X-shaped cross.

Handles vary in material. Plastic, wooden or rubber covers can provide a better grip. Other special tips include Clutch (hourglass), Robertson (square) and Torx (six grooves). Some fasteners can be rotated with a standard or Phillips tips, but matching the tool to the clamp is the key to safety and efficiency.

Safely Using a Screwdriver

First, choose a suitable tip and size. The tip should fit tightly to the fastener’s head. You may need to drill a starter hole or insert a bit into the material before you begin.

Insert the tip of the screwdriver into the screw head. Turn the handle clockwise. Use constant pressure to hold the tip firmly in place. Turn it firmly. Make sure the screw stays straight as it goes into the material.

Keep your hands away from the screw paths. Screwdrivers slip. If your hands are in the way, you will get hurt.

Maintaining Your Screwdriver

The driver does not require much maintenance. The main purpose is to prevent tips from becoming misshapen. Standard screwdriver tips can be filed if worn. Phillips and other special tips are not easy to modify.

Buy a hardened steel screwdriver. Lasts longer and is in better condition than cheaper alternatives.

Related Tools for Fastening

You are not limited to hand tools. A drill with a screw tips is very useful for installing screw fasteners. They do double duty. Just change the drill bit and the power screwdriver is ready.
