Bathrooms, despite their purpose, accumulate humidity from showers and flushing toilets. This creates an ideal environment for mildew and bacteria to thrive on towels, even if they appear dry. As cleaning expert Kathy Cohoon explains, “Since bathrooms are so prone to moisture, keeping excess towels in the room can be tricky as this can lead to mildew, mold, and smelly fabrics.”
This isn’t just about unpleasant smells. Mold and bacteria can cause skin irritation or worsen allergies. The high moisture content also means towels will need more frequent washing—hand towels should be laundered every seven to ten days to stay sanitary.
The Ideal Storage Solution
The best places to store extra towels are in cool, dry spaces away from bathroom humidity. Linen closets, spare bedrooms, or even hallway closets are all better options. If space is limited, consider:
- Bins or baskets: Store towels in breathable containers in a less humid room.
- Under-bed storage: Zippered containers or lidded bins fit easily under most beds.
- Storage ottomans: Slim ottomans can fit in hallways or at the foot of a bed.
If bathroom storage is unavoidable, keep towels in a well-covered container or bamboo basket (bamboo resists mold) to minimize exposure to moisture.
Ventilation and Rotation Matter
Regardless of where you store them, regular use and ventilation are key. Always run the bathroom vent during and after showers, and rotate towels frequently to prevent buildup of humidity and germs. The goal is simple: keep towels dry, clean, and free from unwanted microbes.
